Let's Have a Party Before We Die

Morrie Schwartz had a choice. He asks in his book, Tuesdays with Morrie, “Do I wither up and disappear, or do I make the best of my time left?” His doctors told him he had two years … but he knew it was less … that he was living the last year of his life. And so he had what he called a “living funeral.” He got to hear all the wonderful things his friends would have said at his service. Morrie laughed and cried with them. His “living funeral” was a success.

As I read that book, I thought about the way we (in America) view dying. Many people avoid the dying one. It makes them uncomfortable. But they spiff up and shine their shoes to attend the funeral. I guess they feel safe then. Why don’t we tell them all those wonderful things we think about them while they are still alive to hear it?

If you knew your time on this earth was limited, would you have a party? Jesus did.

His time was very limited … 24 hours. Yet He spent the last hours of His life eating dinner with His closest friends. He knew the torture and horrible death He was facing the next day. But He took time to sit and visit, communicating the last important words to His disciples.

We are all in the process of dying. We know that in our head. But do we really believe that in our heart. If we did, wouldn’t we be more involved in life now … reaching out to others. The death of a loved one makes us sad. But how totally grievous it is to live an empty life of chasing a bigger paycheck instead of learning to love and be loved in return.

Once we learn how to die … then we have learned how to live.

“So Jesus sent two of them into Jerusalem with these instructions: “As you go into the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him. At the house he enters, say to the owner, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples?’ He will take you upstairs to a large room that is already set up. That is where you should prepare our meal.” So the two disciples went into the city and found everything just as Jesus had said, and they prepared the Passover meal there.” Mark 14:13-16 (NLT)
