Tough Love

>> Saturday, August 13, 2011

The choice was his. He could stay in my room while I ironed … or go outside. But Charlie, our dog, wanted to be with my husband, John … so he refused to obey the command to stay. Tail wagging, he headed down the hall to find John … who was getting ready to leave the house … so he promptly escorted Charlie to the back door and put him outside. Immediately, Charlie was at my sliding screen door … begging to come in … whining to be in the very place he had just minutes before rejected.

Isn’t that just like humans?

We give our children choices … this or that. They choose a different path, but all too soon they return, begging to be given this or that. Just like Charlie didn’t know that John was leaving … they don’t know all the facts we’ve obtained from a lifetime of living.

I ignored Charlie’s whining. He had his chance. And I’ve been known to ignore my children’s whining. It’s called “tough love.”

And now I get to the really heavy part.

Isn’t that how we are with God? We have a myriad of choices … but we think we have a better plan … and off we go on our own. When it doesn’t work out, we come back … whining.

God is very good at “tough love.”

“It's the child He loves that He disciplines;
the child He embraces, He also corrects.”
Hebrews 12:6 (MSG)
