Inner Beauty ... Outer Beauty

>> Tuesday, March 6, 2012

The words I heard recently on a television commercial have been resonating in my head. A well-known actress, comedian and television host proclaims … inner beauty is important, but not nearly as important as outer beauty.

How surface is that?

Does she really believe that? What about the cosmetic company proclaiming that truth? Do they even care about the potential damage inflicted by that premise?

So I’ve been observing the women in my life as I go through my days. My convictions have been affirmed.

Inner beauty is far more important than outer beauty.

Oh, I believe if the house needs to be painted … then paint it. Now an image of Tammy Faye Bakker has just arrived in my head. No … not that much paint. But the bottom line is … who is the real you? Cosmetics can’t change that.

We’ve all known women who looked beautiful … until they opened their mouth. Sometimes it’s the air-head who shows up … other times it’s Miss Foul Mouth. No amount of covering on the outside will fix that.

I’ve known women who … by today’s standards … are not beautiful. But they know exactly what they look like … and who they are. It’s delightful to be in their presence … and their inner beauty glows.

Inner beauty … outer beauty … you choose.

“What matters is not your outer appearance—the styling of your hair, the jewelry you wear, the cut of your clothes—but your inner disposition. Cultivate inner beauty, the gentle, gracious kind that God delights in.” I Peter 3:3-4 (MSG)
